Your Journey

Your Journey With Us

Your experience is paramount and it starts from when you first visit The Orthodontic Adviser website. You’ve learnt more about orthodontics; you are now fully informed and you’re ready to create a smile profile.

It's Simple

Once we receive your smile profile we then provide you with a personalised treatment plan. You will know what treatment is best for you, how much treatment will cost and how long it will take.

In treatment earlier

Once you have made the decision to get started with treatment you will be contacted to make an initial appointment. From here you will be in the care of your orthodontist and his or her skilled team. At any stage you can reach out to us at The Orthodontic Adviser and we will be always willing to help. We love hearing from our happy patients!

Results sooner

Depending on your individual needs and the doctor you visit the steps to begin treatment may differ slightly. Some doctors may be able to combine appointment steps to get you started sooner, others may need to take it step by step. Rest assured, either way, your best results are top priority.

Create a smile profile

By creating a Smile Profile you’re already on the journey to improving your smile and starting treatment. Simply fill in the form, add any additional information and upload a short 20-30 second video like the example provided. We can then create a treatment plan that will work for you, based on your Smile Profile.

Receive treatment plan

When you do receive your treatment plan, it’s going to have everything you need to make an informed decision about orthodontic treatment. The type of treatment, how long it will take, the cost, along with the treatment codes for private health insurance, will all be included. We then consult you to discuss any questions or queries you may have.

Your first appointment

Your first appointment will be about getting to know you a little better, discussing your treatment options and your treatment plan. If you completed a Smile Profile the doctor will have most of this information already and you may not have as many questions. Creating a Smile Profile can often make this first appointment a bit quicker.

Before you get started, the treatment coordinator will discuss finance and payment options with you. No matter your situation our doctors are committed to providing quality care and will work with you on a plan that suits your budget and needs. There is always an affordable option and all conversations are discreet. A full set of treatment records will always be taken and your orthodontist will assess these carefully to give you an accurate diagnosis.

If you are comfortable with the treatment plan discussed and committed to getting started you may have treatment records taken at the first appointment. Treatment records will consist of a series of photos, possibly an x-ray and sometimes impressions or a digital scan depending on the treatment you will receive.

Your fitting appointment

No matter what treatment you will receive one thing remains true about all of them – your fitting appointment will be pain free! At this appointment skilled staff will make sure your mouth is comfortable and your new appliance is fitting your teeth correctly. You will be given specific information and guidance about how to care for your braces or Invisalign before you leave. Depending on your individual needs and the doctor you see, you may be able to have your fitting appointment included in your first visit.

After your appliance is fitted

It’s normal to experience some tenderness and discomfort in the days immediately after your appliance is fitted. Although it may not feel wonderful, this is actually good news. The tenderness you may experience is your teeth moving and this means your treatment is underway. Before you leave your fitting appointment you will be given tips and tricks on what to expect and how to manage any discomfort.

Regular adjustment appointments

As your teeth begin to move your orthodontist will want to monitor your progress. Depending on your individual needs and the type of treatment you are having, appointments may be booked at 4-8 week intervals. Regular adjustment appointments are all included in your treatment plan, so there won’t be any hidden costs or surprises. Your doctor will always know what’s best for you and will advise you to make appointments accordingly.

Adjustment appointments are usually quite quick, as short as 5-10 minutes and friendly reception staff can always help with booking these. They understand time is precious and will always do their best to schedule you at convenient times. At these appointments your doctor may make minor adjustments to your braces or fit you with new Invisalign aligners. Each gradual change means you are one step closer to your beautiful new smile!

De-banding appointment

This is the one you’ve been waiting for! Your de-banding appointment is when you braces are removed or you have completed your last Invisalign aligner. Like having your braces or Invisalign fitted, this appointment is also pain free! Your orthodontist will decide when the time is right, after your teeth have completed all the desired movements.

While it’s exciting your braces are coming off, treatment doesn’t stop here. You will now remain in the care of your orthodontist and move into the retention phase. The retention phase is your after care plan and important for long term results. Depending on your individual needs you may be fitted with a small alloy wire behind your teeth. This is called a fixed retainer and ensures that your teeth remain in their new desirable positions. Alternatively you may be given removable retainer. A removable retainer is a thin comfortable mouth guard. You will wear this to bed each night so that your teeth are kept in place and don’t relapse back to their old position.

Once your braces are removed or Invisalign treatment is completed your orthodontist will want to see you for check-ups down the track. Depending on your treatment, this maybe once a year or every two years. Your retention care is included in your treatment plan because your orthodontist knows how important is. There won’t be any extra costs for this and no hidden surprises.

How do you feel when you smile?

“Being a guy I’m embarrassed to see someone and not sure what to ask. My teeth have always bothered me, but I know if I can have a great smile it will change so many things for me.”
